My granddaughter, who is almost 3, has some oral sensory issues with certain foods, I can totally relate to what your going through. Is your daughter in early intervention? An occupational therapist should be able to help her learn to tolerate different textures. We found that our little one didn’t always feel food in her mouth and didn’t really know what to do with it, more so on the left side of her mouth than the right. Motivation, getting them to want something is key to start out with, work with different flavors till she finds one that she likes, than try to use that flavor in different textures. Sometimes the flavors in baby food may not be strong enough for them to really taste, is she has some sensory issues it may just not be flavorful enough for her to be enthusistic. There was a time when our OT started bringing in things like pixi stix powdered candy to try and see what she could taste, we did strong flavors, sweet, sour, spicy even. If she is in OT and you don’t feel like your making progress get an evaluation with another, sometimes different therapists see things from different perspectives.

On another note, is she being followed by a neurosurgeon for her hydro? Lack of appetite can go along with increased pressure so if this is a new behavior that might be something to check into as well.

You might want to check with your local childrens hospital too, many of them have feeding clinics where they help work on these kinds of things as well. I know its frustrating but really the most important thing is that she gets enough calories a day. If she is still on formula her doctor should be able to give you a recipe to increase the calories of the formula shes on so she gets more calories per ounce until she works through her challenges with solids.

I wish I could be more help, if you have any questions or just want to talk feel free to give me a call.

I also could relate to what you are going through. I have a daughter who is 3 years old at first she did not suck on the bottle and I had to feed her via a tube that was inserted via her nose and went down to her stomach. At 6months I was able to ween her away from the NG tube feeding and got her to suck on a bottle for milk. She did spill alot of the milk but she was sucking and gaining weight. I then began to introduce food which had to be puree and at room temp for her to tolerate it. She spilled most of the food out and it was a challenge to feed her. Then around Aug 09 she stop sucking on the bottle and refused to take the puree food by spoon. She lost a lot of weight and was dehydrated I ended up in the hospital for two week and was discharged with a G tube. Which is a tube that is place in her stomach with a peg , throught peg we feed her milk,. I am still trying to get her to eat via spoon and learn how to drink via sip cup. Still a change but we are still working towards increase of puree food via spoon and liquids via a sip cup. My daughter is very indifferent with different tastes or seasoning. Its like she does not like food. The only thing we achieve for her to eat a little better is cereal and cream of wheat. All I could recommend is keep trying to feed your child try new spices or flavors. G tube is not bad if you have no choice to place it on your child in order for them to grow and get their nutrition but it does make it more difficult for you to feed them via mouth.
